martes. el veintidos de noviembre

Spanish I:
  • We went over yesterday's exercises and corrected them in class.
  • We began a new lesson on jusing "hay", and on how to give the date, and how to give your age and birthday. We did exercises #16, 17, and 18 pgs 84-85.
Grammar Notes:

1) Hay
In Spanish, "hay" means "there is" or "there are":

Hay diez chicos en la clase. = There are ten boys in the class.
No hay chicos en la clase. = There are no boys in the class.
Hay un perro en la clase. = There is a dog in the class.

2) Giving the date
Remember that to give the date in Spanish, you need to change the order of the words around. We do not say October 22nd in Spanish. Instead we say the 22 of October. Don't forget that days of the week and months are NOT capitalized in Spanish, and that we do not add any letters to the numbers (no using 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc).

Example:

¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy? = What is today's date?
Note:
If it is the first of the month, you need to write:
Hoy es el primero de noviembre (It is November first).

3) Giving your birthday
To say that it is your birthday:
¿Cuál es la fecha de tu cumpeaños? = When is your birthday?
Mi cumpleaños es el trece de marzo. = My birthday is March 13th.
To say that it is someone else's birthday:
El cumpleaños de Francisco es el dos de mayo. = Francisco's birthday is May 2nd.

IMPORTANT:
  • The 1,3 chapter test will be on Monday, Dec 5th. the study guide is on my Berkley website, and was posted on the blog yesterday. It will be handed out in class next week. Click below to see the study guide.

Spanish I:
  • We went over last week's book exercises.
  • We went over using possessive adjectives in Spanish. Students did exercises 13, 14, and 15 on pgs 82-83. Due tomorrow.
Grammar Notes:

You use possessive adjectives in Spanish to talk about things that are yours. The possessive adjective must agree in gender (masculine/femenine) and number (singular/plural) with the thing that is owned.

Possessive adjectives:

mi/mis = my                           nuestro/nuestra/nuestros/nuestras = our
tu/tus = your (tú)                         vuestro/vuestra/vuestros/vuestras = your
su/sus = his/her                      su/sus = their/ your
               your (usted)

You need to make the possessive adjective agree with the thing/person it describes. It also has to reflect on who it belongs to:

Example:
Es nuestra madre. = She is our mother.
Son nuestros perros. = They are our dogs.

3rd grade Spanish:

  • Students finished their numbers worksheet. They will have a practice quiz on 1-31 next Monday.

  • We went over expressing possession using "de" and how to say what belongs to people.
  • We did exercises 10,11 and 12, pgs 80-81. This is due Monday, November 21st
 Grammar Notes:

  • In English, you use an apostrophe to show possession: Ann's dog.
  • In Spanish, you need to switch the order of words around because there is no apostrophe in Spanish. So you must say "the dog of Ann": el perro de Ann.
  • You do this for things you own and for relationships
Ex.
Es la camisa de Juan. = It is Juan's shirt.
La camisa es de Juan. = The shirt is Juan's.

Either of these sentences are correct, and mean the same thing.

Ella es la madre de Juan. = She is Juan's mother.

Ana y Pedro son los padres de Juan. = Ana and Pedro are Juan's parents.
