- We began unit 3.1. We reviewed verbs like ser and ir, and learned about new verbs: estar, acabar de, and venir, and how to use them correctly in a sentence.
- We reviewed the difference between using ser and estar.
- Students then looked at their vocabulary sentences from last week, and made any necessary corrections. These will be turned in and corrected for accuracy.
Grammar Notes:
1) Using estar and ser
- You use estar to talk about your feelings, emotions, and location: these things can all change quickly.
- You use ser to describe looks and personality, to say what your jobis, and to say where you are from (your origin): these things cannot change quickly.
Yo estoy en la clase de español. = I am in Spanish class.
Yo soy alegre y bonita. = I am happy and pretty. (These are personality traits and looks that cannot change quickly).
Estar = to be
estoy estamos
estás estáis
está están
Ser = to be
soy somos
eres sois
es son
2) Using ir + a + place, or ir + a + verb
- You use ir + a la/al+ place to say where you are going.
Yo voy al parque (a + el = al). = I go to the park.
- You use ir + a + verb to say what you are going to do. When you use ir + a = verb, it is a way to talk about the future.
ir = to go
voy vamos
vas váis
va van
3) Using acabar + de + verb
- You use acabar de to talk about something you have just done, so you can use it to talk about the past. You must conjugate acabar, but you do NOT conjugate the second verb.
acabar = to finish
acabo acabamos
acabas acabáis
acaba acaban
4) Using venir + de + place
- You use venir + de + place to say where you are coming from.
Yo vengo del parque. = I am coming from the park.
Venir = to come
vengo venimos
vienes venís
viene vienene
